PROBLEM: Main Group Leader wants to leave the group

For this experience, our Design Team wanted to create a modal that allowed the leader to choose a replacement and warned them of everything that would happen when they left the group. Here is the original design:

Let's take a look piece by piece…

"If you leave, you will not be able to find this group again..."

This would show up if the group you were trying to leave were unlisted. This would mean that, unless you were an administrator, you could not find this group by searching for it. Our research showed that if you intended to leave a group, needing to find it again was rare.

CHANGE: Removed this text.

"If you leave, You will be removed from these volunteer positions..."

This would show up if you were in positions connected to the group because you must be in the group to remain in those volunteer positions.

CHANGE: This modal appears because the user is trying to leave, we don't need to use the words "If you leave" as that is implied.

[NOTE: In the example above, the text was dynamic between these 2 sentences. By removing the first, the text no longer needs to be dynamic and we can remove the filler that says "and you will also..." between sentences]

"In order to leave as the Main Leader, you must choose a replacement."

'In order to leave' is another way of saying 'If you leave' and we already discussed that above. Using the word 'must' is so demanding and not conversational at all.

CHANGE: To leave as Main Leader, choose your replacement.

"Choose a new main leader"

Well...this is actually pretty solid hint text.

CHANGE: None.

"Instead of leaving, you can change your communication settings..."

This one was controversial. There were several people who felt this was vital to this modal. Giving the user the chance to change their communication settings might keep them involved in the group. Here's the thing, I wasn't convinced this was necessary. If people are leaving groups because they get too many emails, the solution should not be to allow them to change their communication settings when they try to leave the group. Let's solve the communication overload problem and not put a bandaid by inserting the link in this modal.

As it turns out, our metrics show that this link was almost never clicked. When people go to leave a group, they tend to be dead set on leaving the group.

CHANGE: Removed this text.

Here's what we ended up with:
